In my continuing quest to see all of Zooey Deschanel’s back catalogue that I’ve missed until now (nearly there), today I got my hands on The Good Girl. It’s a decent film. Jennifer Aniston plays a store clerk in Texas who lives a very dreary, mundane life. She has a boring job and a boring redneck husband (John C. Reilly) and she longs for a little bit more.

She gets more when she becomes involved with a new young employee at the store (Jake Gyllenhaal). This leads to some decision making problems for her. Will she remain “a good girl”? Zooey is excellent as usual in playing another co-worker at the store who provides some comic relief in the film. She’s quite a dark and surreal character and she has all the best lines. 5 crumbs out of 10.

I rewatched this film yet again today and it still causes a buildup of some kind of watery substance around my eyes. I must go to a doctor to get that checked out. This is one of those films that will always be seen by way less people than should see it, which is a shame because it’s such a gem.

The trailers for it and most descriptions of it don’t do it justice. They make it seem like a playful fantasy film for children, a ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ for little kids but it’s real strength is in the human relationships on show. The film is about two preteens, Jess and Leslie, who are social outcasts for different reasons but become friends and each brings out something positive in the other. Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb play the characters quite well and will surely progress successfully in their careers.

What drew me to watch this film in the first place was of course the presence of the beautiful Zooey Deschanel. She plays a teacher who provides inspiration to the children in her music classes, particularly to Jess. And as in some of her previous films, Zooey gets the chance to showcase her singing and musical talents.

‘Bridge to Terabithia’ would be pretty meaningless to young children. Preteens and older will get much more from it but I recommend it to all adults too. It’s an excellent and emotional film and easily gets 8 crumbs out of 10 from me.

I knew this was a total chick flick and I knew that it would be rubbish before I watched it but I had to see it because of the lovely Zooey Deschanel. Thankfully it was worth watching for Zooey’s performance. She was the only decent thing in the film and any scene she wasn’t in had me reaching for a pen in order to stab at my eyeballs.

Let’s not beat around the bush here. This film is bad. Really, really bad! Like most people, I can’t stand watching Sarah Jessica Parker in anything. And Matthew McConaughey is just too good looking. So praise be to goodness that Zooey is so beautiful and funny. 1 crumb out of 10.

This 2006 film is about a witless wannabe criminal and his unwitting accomplice getting up to no good in New Hampshire. Well, they think they’re getting up to no good when really they’re hardly a blip on the radar.

Aaron Stanford is good as the guy who talks the talk but has barely committed a crime in his life but Paul Schneider is really great as the semi-retard who looks up to him. The lovely Zooey Deschanel plays his sister and is the straight character who allows us to get some laughs from the other two.

It’s the type of film that could easily have fallen flat but the two writer/directors, who had previously worked on Seinfeld, nicely captured the quirky, small-town humour. 5 crumbs out of 10.

On deciding to take a break from watching films about fake girls, I watched two films today called “Lars And The Real Girl” and “All The Real Girls”. The three pertinent questions of (i) whether the films are related in any way, (ii) is it significant that they both star Paul Schneider and Patricia Clarkson and (iii) is there a reason I watched them both on the same day can all be answered with one word – no.

Lars And The Real Girl is the warm story of Lars Lindstrom, a 27 year old who leads a simple life but may also be simple minded. He buys a life-sized sex doll over the internet but genuinely believes she’s alive and treats her as his girlfriend, going so far as to introduce her to the people he knows. The main focus of the film is in how these people react and try to help Lars.

I’d recommend seeing this with as few people as possible. I was in a cinema with about 10 people who all seemed to think it was some sort of Ben Stiller dumbass comedy farce. Although the film is tinged with humour, there are only a few moments which are meant to be laugh-out-loud funny. It’s mostly a charming and endearing film. Unfortunately some idiots think they are meant to belly laugh at anything that seems slightly awkward.

Ryan Gosling is great in the lead role. It’s hard to think that it’s the same guy from The Believer (where he played a young neo-nazi anti-semite). Overall it’s a delightful film that deserves at least 6 crumbs out of 10.

All The Real Girls is a 2003 film set in a small town of North Carolina which centres on Paul and Noel (the female version of the name, as in Noelle), played by Paul Schneider and the always wonderful and beautiful Zooey Deschanel. Paul has a reputation as the town womaniser while Noel is young and chaste and has just returned from boarding school. As they fall for each other, we follow the development of their relationship.

I love films that seem ‘real’. Films where the characters find themselves in situations that I’ve been in or could be in and where they do and say things that I could’ve done or said. This is one of those films. The script does a good job of getting across how it’s sometimes difficult for characters to express themselves properly and the problems this can cause. The actors portray this very well.

The cinematography is also excellent with some gorgeous shots of the rural scenery. 5 crumbs out of 10.

Set in 1880s Midwestern America and filmed in the prairies of Alberta, this is a really beautifully shot film. At 2hrs 40mins, its running time and sedate pace will put off some people but I found it captivating.

The real life bandit and hero, Jesse James, is played by Brad Pitt but the real star of the film is Casey Affleck who plays his eventual murderer Robert Ford. Affleck’s restrained portrayal of Ford’s character development is simply fantastic. Oscar-worthy, even.

The supporting cast are also impressive, particularly Sam Rockwell, Paul Schneider, Garret Dillahunt and my perennial favourite Zooey Deschanel who only appears in the last act. In fact it’s a measure of the film’s quality that I had forgotten about her absence until she finally showed up. It’s not often that something makes me forget about Zooey! 7 crumbs out of 10.
