I probably mentioned this before but I like R-rated comedies because a lot of the good stuff can’t be put in the trailer, as opposed to other comedies where half the film is in the trailer. So while the jist of this film’s story is obvious before you see it, it’s still funny to hear Will Ferrell telling John C. Reilly, “you’re a big, fat, curly-headed fuck!”

It doesn’t pretend to be any more than it is, which is a credit. It’s crude, juvenile and full of slapstick and while it’s very hit and miss, the hits are pretty good. The whole cast is great and the song that Ferrell and Reilly perform is brilliant. It gets 4 crumbs out of 10 from me.

In my continuing quest to see all of Zooey Deschanel’s back catalogue that I’ve missed until now (nearly there), today I got my hands on The Good Girl. It’s a decent film. Jennifer Aniston plays a store clerk in Texas who lives a very dreary, mundane life. She has a boring job and a boring redneck husband (John C. Reilly) and she longs for a little bit more.

She gets more when she becomes involved with a new young employee at the store (Jake Gyllenhaal). This leads to some decision making problems for her. Will she remain “a good girl”? Zooey is excellent as usual in playing another co-worker at the store who provides some comic relief in the film. She’s quite a dark and surreal character and she has all the best lines. 5 crumbs out of 10.

While it mostly mocks the Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk The Line’, Dewey Cox will blatantly copy the style of any musician in vogue and his performances are pretty decent as well as funny. My favourite thing about the film though is the beautiful Jenna Fischer. She’s a doll.

Some jokes fall a bit flat but overall it’s worth a watch and gets 5 crumbs out of 10.
