Fireworks in Vancouver

A tradition every summer in Vancouver is the ‘Celebration of Light‘, a fireworks display competition held over four different nights in English Bay. Last night was the Canadian entry and many, many thousands of people crowded the beaches and streets of the West End and Kitsilano to catch the show. (read more…)

The Dark Knight

Chris Nolan can do no wrong. He’s already demonstrated his filmmaking genius with films like Memento and The Prestige and his take on the Batman series is a breath of fresh air to the superhero / action movie / comic book adaption genre. With ‘The Dark Knight’ he has even surpassed the brilliance of Batman Begins. (read more…)

The Love Guru

I’d love to say that this is the worst film I’ve ever seen but that wouldn’t be fair because I didn’t even manage to sit through the whole thing – it was that bad! In fact, it took just 12 minutes for me to become so depressed and suicidal that I started fast-forwarding through it. I’m so glad I didn’t pay a single penny to see this rubbish. (read more…)

Hancock

Not the type of film I’d usually bother with but with Peter Berg directing (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom) and Vince Gilligan lending a hand to the writing (one of the best writers on The X-Files), I thought I’d give it a shot. (read more…)

Wimbledon Men’s Final 2008

Being in a different timezone sucks for watching live sport in Europe but there was no way I was going to miss this year’s Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, so up I woke at 6am and boy was it worth it! (read more…)

Young People Fucking

Don’t freak out, the title of this film is a bit of a misnomer – not all of the people in it are that young. One of them is 31! This Canadian film intercuts five unrelated stories involving 11 people (yes, 11!) as we follow their exploits (sexploits?) over a period of one night. (read more…)

Spain Win Euro 2008

Three wins out of three in the group stages. In the quarter-finals they completely outplayed arch-rivals Italy and eventually won on penalties. They demolished Russia in the semi-finals and then today they outclassed Germany in the final, winning 1-0 for their third consecutive clean sheet in the knockout stage. (read more…)

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

The sequel to ‘Harold & Kumar go to White Castle’ pretty much follows the format of the first one, only on a bigger scale. And that’s no bad thing. H&K2 is just as funny as the original. (read more…)

Vancouver in the Spring

We had a nice sunny day here today so I did a lot of walking around and took a few snaps. (read more…)

Nada Surf at The Commodore

I saw indie poppers Nada Surf last night at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. I left with an overall feeling of “meh”. I like sticking on one of their albums every now and then and I think 2005’s ‘The Weight is a Gift’ is pretty good but there’s always a case of sameness with their musical style and that was very evident in their live show.
