Southland Tales
What an absolutely ingenious mess of a film! Even at 2hrs 25 mins, it’s still too short. It’s obvious that writer/director Richard Kelly had to edit a lot out. I’d love to see a 4 hour cut of the film because there’s just so much stuff going on that needs more time to develop. But ultimately this is the version that we get to see and we have to make do with it. (read more…)

There Will Be Bud
If you thought ‘There Will Be Blood‘ was a work of genius then wait until you get a load of ‘There Will Be Bud’, a parody of the trailer for Blood. It’s a fantastically made production and extremely funny. (read more…)

Semi-Pro
I’m a big fan of Will Ferrell but it gets tiring when he just keeps making the same film. In Semi-Pro he plays another outrageously larger-than-life character who yet again finds an excuse to take off his clothes (this time to fight a bear). (read more…)

Vantage Point
Haha, what an embarrassingly pathetic film this is. Really, really awful. I don’t know what actors like Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega and William Hurt are doing signing up for this crap. (read more…)

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I love the dark style of Tim Burton and I’ve nothing against a good musical every now and then but for some reason I didn’t really connect with this film. I’m sure that if I give it another chance I’ll appreciate the music more but when watching it I kept waiting impatiently for each song to finish. It felt to me that what was achieved with a three minute song could have been done with a couple of lines of dialogue. (read more…)

Be Kind Rewind
I was looking forward to this Michel Gondry film but ultimately I left disappointed. There’s no doubt that Gondry is a whizz behind the camera but his attempts at writing are sketchy. If he just stuck to directing Charlie Kaufman scripts then he’d be a legend. But of course Kaufman has moved on to directing his own work now. (read more…)

The Good Girl
In my continuing quest to see all of Zooey Deschanel’s back catalogue that I’ve missed until now (nearly there), today I got my hands on The Good Girl. It’s a decent film. Jennifer Aniston plays a store clerk in Texas who lives a very dreary, mundane life. She has a boring job and a boring redneck husband (John C. Reilly) and she longs for a little bit more. (read more…)

In Bruges
We’ve all seen film trailers which looked promising only for the film to turn out to be a stinking pile of rubbish. Similarly we’ve all seen trailers that look dreadful and sure enough, the film turns out to be another stinking pile of rubbish. In Bruges is one of those rarities where the trailer made it seem like a dire film but it actually turned out to be pretty good. (read more…)

Bridge to Terabithia
I rewatched this film yet again today and it still causes a buildup of some kind of watery substance around my eyes. I must go to a doctor to get that checked out. This is one of those films that will always be seen by way less people than should see it, which is a shame because it’s such a gem. (read more…)

Failure To Launch
I knew this was a total chick flick and I knew that it would be rubbish before I watched it but I had to see it because of the lovely Zooey Deschanel. Thankfully it was worth watching for Zooey’s performance. She was the only decent thing in the film and any scene she wasn’t in had me reaching for a pen in order to stab at my eyeballs. (read more…)
