Nada Surf at The Commodore
I saw indie poppers Nada Surf last night at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. I left with an overall feeling of “meh”. I like sticking on one of their albums every now and then and I think 2005’s ‘The Weight is a Gift’ is pretty good but there’s always a case of sameness with their musical style and that was very evident in their live show. Shoot ‘Em Up
Wow, what an hilariously brilliant film this is! It’s an incredible, over-the-top, piss-take, self-deprecating, action movie that is equal parts exhilarating and funny. Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti are brilliant as the dry, uber-cool, caricatured hero and villain. (read more…)


The Counterfeiters
This is an Austrian film about a group of dudes put into a German concentration camp pre-WWII. They were hand picked specifically to implement a large counterfeiting operation designed to damage the economies of Germany’s enemies. (read more…)


Southland Tales
What an absolutely ingenious mess of a film! Even at 2hrs 25 mins, it’s still too short. It’s obvious that writer/director Richard Kelly had to edit a lot out. I’d love to see a 4 hour cut of the film because there’s just so much stuff going on that needs more time to develop. But ultimately this is the version that we get to see and we have to make do with it. (read more…)


There Will Be Bud
If you thought ‘There Will Be Blood‘ was a work of genius then wait until you get a load of ‘There Will Be Bud’, a parody of the trailer for Blood. It’s a fantastically made production and extremely funny. (read more…)


Semi-Pro
I’m a big fan of Will Ferrell but it gets tiring when he just keeps making the same film. In Semi-Pro he plays another outrageously larger-than-life character who yet again finds an excuse to take off his clothes (this time to fight a bear). (read more…)
