Once
I only got around to seeing this today and I wish it hadn’t taken me so long. A love story musical shot in Dublin over 17 days for around €100k with two musicians as the lead characters wouldn’t generally equate to an excellent film but that’s what happened. (read more…)

Persepolis
In the late 1970s there was a revolution in Iran where some lunatics kicked the crap out of some other lunatics. Persepolis is the autobiographical story of a young girl who lived through the events and the aftermath of it all. (read more…)

There Will Be Blood
Wow, what a brave film this is. True cinema auteurs in the mold of Welles and Kubrick are rarities nowadays but writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best modern examples. I love all his previous films and ‘There Will Be Blood’ could turn out to be his masterpiece. (read more…)

The Wire
The fifth and final season of The Wire started on HBO last night. In case you don’t know, The Wire is the greatest television show ever. For those who’ve never seen it or never even heard of it, I’ll try to elucidate without spoiling anything. (read more…)

The Savages
This is quite a good dramedy. It’s mostly drama with some dark comic moment dealing with the morose subject of an eldery parent who is close to death. Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman are great as the children who have to take care of their ailing father. (read more…)

I’m Not There
This is a Bob Dylan biopic, of sorts. Various different actors play different characters, each embodying different stages of Dylan’s life. (read more…)

Charlie Wilson’s War
When I read that Aaron Sorkin (of The West Wing etc.) had penned the screenplay for this, I was looking forward to a good political satire. I was a bit disappointed with the end result but overall it’s not too bad of a film. (read more…)
