Persepolis

In the late 1970s there was a revolution in Iran where some lunatics kicked the crap out of some other lunatics. Persepolis is the autobiographical story of a young girl who lived through the events and the aftermath of it all.

Marjane Satrapi is the girl and she originally published this story as a graphic novel a few years ago while living in Paris. As such, this film was made in the same style – a black and white animation. The contrast in colour is indicative of the contrasts at work in the story. Although the pre and post revolution leaders in Iran were tyrannical and oppressive, Marjane’s family were more liberal.

When she was old enough, her parents sent her to school in Vienna in order to escape the Iranian regime. Here again Marjane struggles to integrate with the culture and after a few years she returns to Tehran. Altogether it’s a compelling story with an interesting presentation. 6 crumbs out of 10.
