Into The Wild

I think I saw the film of the year today. I’m not doubting that it’s the film of the year, just whether or not I saw it. And yes, on further thinking, I did in fact see it. Made by Sean Penn, based on the book by Jon Krakauer which was itself based on the life of Chris McCandless, a promising college graduate who decided to shun modern society and take a trip into nature with the hope of living alone in the Alaskan wilderness. The Darjeeling Limited

I’m a fan of the previous work of writer/director Wes Anderson but with each film I grow increasingly weary of the quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness. This film is about three brothers, each with their own similar but different problems, taking a journey through India to meet with their estranged mother. (read more…)

Michael Clayton

Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who scribed the adapted screenplays for the three Bourne films, Michael Clayton is a very different kind of thriller. It’s a more sedately paced piece, dealing with a specialist lawyer (George Clooney) who does the behind-the-scenes dirty work for his firm which represents some large and important clients. American Gangster

Billed as a gangster epic, this film came as something of a disappointment. It seemed more like a summary of the important points in the lives of the two main characters rather than the detailed biopic it could have been. It’s still enjoyable enough as it is though. (read more…)

Clocks back

Last Sunday, while I was still in Ireland, clocks switched from Daylight Saving Time back to GMT, meaning I had a 25 hour day to enjoy. In North America, the change didn’t happen until today which gives me the Brucie Bonus of another 25 hour day! (read more…)

Kitsilano and the return of The X-Files

Did some boring stuff this morning like opening a bank account. Helped out a couple of tourists looking for directions even though I’ve only been here three days myself. Then I got a bus to Kitsilano for the afternoon. It’s a lovely area just outside the downtown core. (read more…)
