Milk is bad, mmmkay?
I’ve decided to give up dairy products for a while. There are various reasons for this but mainly I just think it’s a really weird thing for humans to be drinking cow’s milk. (read more…)

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead
There’s nothing strikingly original about this film but it still manages to engage you for its duration. It’s a tightly crafted thriller about a jewellery store robbery gone wrong which results in the already fucked-up lives of the characters taking an almighty turn for the worse. (read more…)

The Mist
Man, did I dislike this movie. Adapted from a Stephen King novel, it’s a typical horror formula - people from a small town get holed up somewhere while an unknown menace threatens from outside. Here the menace comes in the form of a large cloud of mist. Egawds! Ok well, there’s something in the mist. A big reptilian creature of some sort and lots of smaller ugly ones too. (read more…)

Control
Control is a biopic about Ian Curtis, the lead singer of late 70s Manchester band Joy Division. Shot in black and white, the film follows Curtis’s life from his schooldays to him joining the band to their success and to his suicide in 1980 aged just 23. (read more…)

The Village
I missed this 2004 film in the cinema, probably intentionally as I think Shyamalan is a numpty, but I watched it tonight for some reason. Shyamalan certainly has some talent in filmmaking but not as a full-on writer/director. His best asset is probably ripping off Hitchcock. (read more…)

Lions For Lambs
Directed by and starring Robert Redford, ‘Lions For Lambs’ is a dialogue-heavy piece about American politics relating to its war in the Middle East. It traverses between three connected stories, each happening at the same time. (read more…)

Gone Baby Gone
After extolling Casey Affleck’s performance in ‘The Assassination of Jesse James’ just a few days ago, today I watched him excel in the lead role of ‘Gone Baby Gone’, the directorial debut of his older brother Ben. The film is an adaption of the novel by Dennis Lehane who previously wrote ‘Mystic River’ and whose latest book, ‘Shutter Island’, will be given the Scorcese treatment next year. Lehane has also written for TV show, ‘The Wire’. (read more…)

Archos 605
My poor old iPod is a few years old now and its battery life just isn’t what it used to be. Plus, 20GB is nowhere near big enough to hold my music collection. So after much research over the last few weeks I decided to get an Archos 605 wifi. (read more…)

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Set in 1880s Midwestern America and filmed in the prairies of Alberta, this is a really beautifully shot film. At 2hrs 40mins, its running time and sedate pace will put off some people but I found it captivating. (read more…)

No Country For Old Men
After a couple of dreary efforts, the Coen brothers have produced possibly their best film in what is already a glittering back catalogue. Adapted from a Cormac McCarthy novel, No Country is a film noir thriller set in sunny Texas. (read more…)
